The midfielder has struggled for regular game time in last few seasons

Mateo Kovacic joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan for a reported fee €35 million in 2015. He established himself as one of the most promising in Serie A before moving to Spain.

He has already won three consecutive Champions League and one La Liga title with the European giants.

But since joining them, the Croatian has struggled to lock down a starting role at the Santiago Bernabeu . He has failed to oust countryman Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casimero and often been reduced to the bench.

The 24 year old just managed to make start 37 La Liga games in the last three year and appeared 32 times in all competitions last season.

The midfielder has been frustrated with the lack of regular football but it was believed that he would benefit when Zinedine Zidane decided to leave the Spanish side last month.

But the Croatia International is keen to leave them this summer in search for regular football.

Speaking to Marca , Kovacic said: “I want to play more and the best thing is to leave Madrid.

“I love football and being on the pitch. I want the opportunity to be a starter on another team. If I do not play, I’m not happy.

“I think that in Real Madrid all the players are important.

“The problem is that for a young player it is difficult to have continuity and without that continuity I will never be able to show my potential.

“When I do not play, I am not happy.

“These three years in Madrid, with some incredible team-mates, winning trophies… but I have not been completely happy because my contribution to all that has not been the maximum and it’s something I want to change.

“I’ve been in Madrid for three years and I have not played too much and that’s something that has affected my status in the national team.

“It’s something that does not make me happy, that’s why it’s best to change teams.”

Premier League club Tottenham have shown strong interest in him, who has a £44 million release clause, and are monitoring his situation. He has also been linked with a return to his former club.

Kovacic is currently away on international duty with Croatia at the World Cup, but has failed to start either of his country’s first 2 group games.
