Right-back has lost his place in club and country first-team

Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy will consider his Arsenal future in the New Year after being left out of France’s recent European Qualifiers squad.

The Frenchman was seriously considering leaving the Emirates Stadium over the summer, despite joining from Newcastle United just a year before, but he decided to stay-put in order to fight for his place.

However, Arsene Wenger has continued to go with the developing and impressive Hector Bellerin at right-back, leaving Debuchy on the sidelines.

Due to losing his spot at club-level, Debuchy has also been left out of Didier Deschamps‘ squad for the upcoming qualifiers, putting his chance of playing in next summer’s euros in jeopardy.

France are hosting the competition so Debuchy will be desperate to get into the squad.

The 30-year-old has made just three appearances for the Gunners this season, and he’s admitted that come January, he may have to make a decision regarding his future.

Debuchy on His Future

“In the long-term, if this situation continues it could become tricky,” he said.

“He [Wenger] knows I’m worried though because there’s an important deadline at the end of the season.

“It’s a must to hold down a first team place. It’s clear. To be effective on the field you need game time.”

“It is difficult,” Debuchy added. “Even if I had not played a lot last season, in my head I would return to start after my recovery.

“But, at the Community Shield against Chelsea, Wenger chose him, Bellerin. It was a surprise and a disappointment.

“Let’s say it [leaving] crossed my mind. But I want to be at Arsenal and to take my place.”
