Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has heaped praise upon midfielder Mathieu Flamini and has claimed that he has helped stable the defence as well as the midfield.

The Gunners have lacked a holding-midfielder for the past two seasons, but in the Summer, Wenger shocked many when he re-signed Flamini after his contract expired at the San Siro, and since then, he has become crucial for Wenger and Arsenal.

So far this season, it is in fact Arsenal that have the best defensive record and Wenger believes it’s not just the back-four that deserve credit for that, it’s also Flamini.

“He is more focused on defending well and helping out,” the boss said. “That is what he has brought to the team and the squad.

“We had no real defensive midfielders. All our players in the middle of the park like to attack and are creatively focused.

“It is good that he is concerned by [defensive duties] because in our team most players are only concerned by how quickly we can go to the other goal.

“Someone who has that focus helps to stabilise our defensive record. He has certainly contributed to improve our defensive record.”
