Matthijs de Ligt was shocked to hear some of the stories that came out amidst the heavy transfer speculation surrounding him all summer.
The highly coveted Dutchman was one of the most wanted young talents in football before his move to Juventus for Ajax for a huge fee. De Ligt seemingly was linked with everyone of the European big guns including Manchester United.
A report came out claiming that a certain scout had tipped the Red Devils off from signing De Ligt as a child, as his family was obese and he too were thought to potentially face weight issues later in his career.
“Every day, there was something new,” the defender told Voetbal International. “Suddenly, even my father was too fat and that’s why one of the clubs wouldn’t want me. That makes you go, ‘Come on, man…'”
De Ligt’s transfer to Juventus cost around £85m along with a huge salary package for the 19-year-old. However, he insists that money did not play a role in his decision.
“Money played no role at all in my choice for a new club,” he continued. “Everyone who knows me, knows that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I will respect that, but some people were saying things like that [PSG story] very easily.”
The one person who has been also involved in controversies has been his agent, Mino Raiola, who also caters to big names like Zlatan Ibrahimovich, Paul Pogba and Marco Veratti.
“He has a lot of experience,” De Ligt said of Raiola. “I think there may be a certain negative image of him in Holland, but I certainly don’t experience it that way. I think if you ask all of his players if Mino does a good job for them, everyone would say yes. That’s the most important thing. It’s not about what other people say about him, it’s about what he can do for me.”
