Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Harry Kane will start in the club’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan. The England captain’s performances in the Premier League hasn’t been very convincing unlike his World Cup performances. So far, he has scored two goals from 5 matches.

Tottenham faced their second successive Premier League defeat against Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday. Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead before Erik Lamela scored a consolation during the dying moments of the match.

Despite Harry Kane’s inconsistency, Pochettino has said that it would be crazy to leave the striker out against Inter Milan. When asked about leaving Kane out against Inter Milan, the Argentine replied, “I think we would be crazy to think different. I don’t know what you expect from me, or what you think my answer should be.

He’s one of the best strikers in the world. I don’t care that he wasn’t great [on Saturday]. He’s going to score goals and he’s going to perform in the way we want and we expect. No problem.”

Tottenham Hotspur made no signings this summer and most of their key players had a hectic World Cup campaign. Despite this, Pochettino has said that he trusts his squad. He said, “It’s not a problem. Of course there is a challenge with nine players involved until the end of the World Cup, but I’m not going to complain. We provided them with a good rest, 21 days, and they started a few days before the competition started at Newcastle United.

We knew that it was a massive challenge for us. When you win, you win. When you lose, yes of course you need to talk about different things, but I’m not worried. We are going to win a lot of games. We have trust in the squad. Of course we need to improve, but we’re in a very good way.”

Tottenham begin their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan at the San Siro tomorrow. This will be the fifth meeting between both clubs and their third in the Champions League. The last meeting between both sides was in 2013 in a Europa League round of 16 game at San Siro. Inter won 4-1 but Spurs advanced to the quarter-finals on away goals since they beat them 3-0 in the home leg.

The last time both clubs met at the Champions League was in 2010 when they were in the same group of the 2010-11 Champions League. Tottenham won the match 3-1 at White Hart Lane. The last Champions League match between Inter and Tottenham at the San Siro was a thrilling encounter. Inter won 4-3.
