Mauro Icardi has insisted Inter Milan were below par in their 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.

On the back of a derby victory over AC Milan, Inter supposed to pounce on the Catalan giants who were playing without their star player Lionel Messi who fractured his arm. But Icardi failed to live up to the mark as Barcelona defence were rarely troubled.

Goals from Rafinha and Jordi Alba were enough to secure their third victory which means the Spanish giants have almost secured their passage to the round of 16. The Rosario born striker was roped in by the famed La Masia academy back in 2008 but couldn’t back up his talent and left the club after three years.

Icardi said, “I think the difference was in the first-half, where we didn’t play up to Inter standards.

“We left too many spaces and allowed them the initiative.

“In the second-half, we did better and forced Barcelona to misplace passes, but could’ve done more to make the most of the situation by finishing off the chances.

“I am not very happy with the performance, because we could’ve done well from the start and instead were pinned back. We’ve got to put in a great shift at San Siro [in two weeks’ time] and get points to go through.

“We knew that we were up against world class champions who have won everything over the years. If you allow them a goal, it becomes difficult to recover.”
