Mauro Icardi insists he wants to prove his mettle in Argentine colours. Interim coach Lionel Scaloni has included the player in the squad which is scheduled to face Guatemala and Columbia this month.

Icardi was ignored again and again by Jorge Sampaoli who was adamant not to include the Inter Milan striker in the World Cup squad. Argentina managed to clear the group hurdle but they were outclassed by a superior Belgium in the last 16.

Some reports stated Icardi’s omission from the Argentine team was due to his relationship with his wife Wanda Nara who also happens to be the former spouse of Maxi Lopez.

However, the forward wants to concentrate solely on football and wants to prove his worth for his country.

“I will always be available for selection and I want to set a good example with the Argentina squad.

“I am here to prove what I can do. Lionel Scaloni continues to show that I am important in his eyes and I want to achieve great things with the national team

“I have decided to forget the criticism of the past. I want to show the people of Argentina the best side of me.

“I don’t ask myself why I was left out of the World Cup squad. It was a decision the Coach made and that’s where it ended. I did suffer sitting at home watching the tournament, but I will always be available when called upon.”
