Mick McCarthy has said he wants to build the team around West Ham United player Declan Rice.

The 19-year-old player has represented Ireland at every level so far except the senior one.

Ireland national team manager Mick McCarthy has said that he wants to build his team around West Ham United ace Declan Rice. The 19-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers for the east London outfit this season and is in contention to join the Ireland senior national team. The defender turned defensive midfielder has played at every level so far for the Irish national squad and McCarthy wants him to continue playing for the senior side as well.

The manager has high hopes about the West Ham ace and has said that he sees him as the future captain of the Irish national team as well. McCarthy said, “I think he’s a really talented player.” He added, “I thought he was a lovely lad, he’s got a really nice family behind him and he has everything about him that makes you want him to play for you. That’s still my case, I want him to play for us. I’d love to build a team around him. We start in March and that’s my deadline I guess, I need to know by then. I’d like to build a team around him and he could be a future captain – he’s that type of player.”

The West Ham United youngster has played 14 matches on a trot for full 90 minutes this season and has established himself as an automatic choice for the first team setup under Manuel Pellegrini.
