The German World Cup winner lost control of his car during a downpour on the M1

Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker is said to be “shaken but unhurt” after losing control of his car on the M1 Motorway.

The 30-year-old is said to have hit the central reservation during a downpour – ultimately losing control of his car.

An Arsenal source said that the defender was “shaken but unhurt”.

A witness to the accident said: “Per was sitting looking shaken alongside cops on M1 near the Bricket Wood/Watford turnoff after a car crash.”

Per had an accident after he left training this morning [Monday] when he went onto the M1 returning home.

“The car aquaplaned into the crash area on the central reservation.

“He was shaken up but not injured. No other vehicles were involved and there was no one else in his car.

“It’s not a big deal. Per is fine and ready to return to training.”

Arsenal have said that their towering defender is fit to return to training, although unlikely to play a part in the Gunners’ tie in Croatia against Dinamo Zagreb, due to illness.
