The defender has labelled the treatment of Schweinsteiger as “perverse”

Per Mertesacker has slammed Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The two players know each other from their international side, as both men have represented Germany before.

Mertesacker has now come out and defended his fellow German by claiming that the treatment of him by Jose Mourinho is “perverse.”

Since the Special One took the reigns at Old Trafford, he has gone out and tried to make the Red Devils squad his own, clearing out unwanted players and bringing in new talent such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.

Training with the Under-23 side

One of the biggest names to be told they weren’t in Mourinho’s plans was Schweinsteiger, who has now been forced to train with the club’s Under-23 side. The midfielder was told he isn’t part of the plans at United anymore, causing an outcry from fans and players alike for the way he has been treated.

Mertesacker is the latest player to come out and voice his opinion on the matter – and he isn’t happy. He told Kicker: “It’s bad luck for him that he joined a club that has again changed its manager, and that the new manager doesn’t want him.

“It can happen to you at any time in this business, and it’s a bit perverse, but Basti signed a good contract, and he knew where he was going. He just had bad luck with the way it worked out. He will draw his conclusions and I wish him all the best.”

Mertesacker himself is currently sat on the sidelines but not because he has been snubbed by his boss too – the German has instead been sidelined with a knee injury.
