Messi has opted for an emotional return to his nation.
Lionel Messi has given a hint about his future after the end of his contract in the United States. The Argentine striker will see his contract expire in 2025. He will play one more season with Inter Miami and he will be a free agent in the winter of 2026.
The 37-year-old had a great summer as his side won second Copa America with Argentina in the United States. He sustained an ankle injury in the final against Colombia and missed two months of action for Inter Miami in MLS.
The 2022 World Cup winner came back on September 15, providing a brace and an assist in the comeback game. Inter Miami are likely to win the Supporters’ Shield as they are six points ahead of second-placed LA Galaxy.
As per Spanish publication El Nacional, the former Barca star has decided his next destination ahead of his inevitable Inter Miami exit. The report adds that Messi has opted for an emotional return to his nation.
The Miami forward will ply his trade for Newell’s Old Boys. Messi started his career before leaving for Barcelona at the age of 13. His contract will expire in December 2025 due to his links with teh Argentine club.
Messi may finish his career in his country with Old Boys. The World Cup winner will also eye title defense in 2026 and it will be his last major event for Argentina. Next Copa America will be in 2028 and he can’t play till then. He will be 39 at the end of the world cup 2026.
