Michael Carrick says coaching badges could help him extend Manchester United contract

Michael Carrick claims that taking his coaching badges has already developed him as a player and could help him extend his Manchester United career.

The 35-year-old has been used sporadically by Jose Mourinho so far this campaign but has played a key role in United’s run of form, with them winning all six games in which the England international has featured.

Carrick’s current deal with the Red Devils is due to expire at the end of the season and although he admits that he has to be ‘realistic’ about his future, taking coaching qualifications has improved him as a midfielder which could possibly swing Mourinho’s arm to offer him a new deal at Old Trafford.

“The badges are going alright actually, I’m not far from finishing my ‘A’ license now. I’ve been doing a lot of work with the Under 14s and it’s something I really enjoy,” Carrick, who is currently studying his UEFA ‘A’ License, told Sky Sports News HQ.

“Fitting it in is the biggest problem around schedules and games especially, with having so many games at the moment.

“I think I’ve probably improved as a player as well since I’ve started doing my badges and thinking about the game a bit differently.”

Asked if he would like to remain a United player beyond this season, he added: “Yeah, but I’m 35 now and I have to be realistic.”
