Ex-Liverpool striker believes club will move on if winger quits

BT Sport commentator Michael Owen doesn’t believe Raheem Sterling would be a massive loss to Liverpool Football Club if he chooses to leave.

The 20-year-old has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield after informing the club he won’t be signing a new deal no matter what is offered due to the lack of trophies in recent years.

Sterling revealed in an interview earlier this season that he wants to be at a club who competes for trophies on a regular basis, and despite reaching two Semi-Finals this season, the winger is not happen in Merseyside.

Fans of Liverpool have already turned on the winger, booing him at the End of Season Award ceremony and giving him a hostile reception during their final game of the season against Stoke City.

However, according to their former-striker, the England international wouldn’t be a massive loss to the club if he does leave.

‘Sterling can be replaced’

Owen said: “Sterling is a very good player but put it this way – a year ago Liverpool lost Luis Suarez. He is irreplacable. If Liverpool lose Sterling they can replace him.

“If I was a Liverpool fan I wouldn’t be losing sleep if Sterling did leave and they got a fair old chunk of money. You can replace Sterling. You can’t replace Suarez.”

The former-player continued by admitting he expects the pacy winger to leave the club in the near-future.

Owen Expects Sale

“I expect him to not be a Liverpool player. If he was pushing the boundaries for a better contract, it has gone too far now.

“Public opinion has counted against him. We have got someone with two years left on his contract and it has been dragged out for so long. It has not been handled great.

“The club need an answer and it’s probably in Liverpool’s interest to make that public, putting the pressure on for a decision.”

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are all reportedly interested in signing the winger.
