Eidur Gudjohnsen has boosted his chances of playing for Iceland at the European Championships in France this summer, after signing for Norwegian side, Molde FK, managed by former Manchester United forward, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 37-year-old veteran forward was a free-agent, following a brief stay at Chinese club Shijiazhuang Ever Bright, but returns to Europe after signing a two-year contract on Friday.

Gudjohnsen will be hoping that regular first-team football for Solskjaer’s side will see him gain a place in the Icelandic travelling party for the Euros, when the tournament kicks off in June, with the former Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea and Barcelona man still harbouring a burning ambition to represent his country at the Finals.

He even came out of international retirement to help their qualifying cause, and will now be hoping that he can build upon his current tally of 25 goals in 84 appearances, should he be selected for the trip to the Championships.

Molde  finished sixth within the league table of Norway’s Tippeligaen last season, though under the guidance of their returning manager, they have notched up five straight wins.

Gudjohnsen could make his debut as early as this coming Thursday, when his new team take on Sevilla away from home in first-leg of the Europa League round of 32.

Molde will be the 15th club of Gudjohnsen’s illustrious playing career,  a prolonged spell in the professional game which has seen him win the Premier League, La Liga and the Champions League.
