The Portuguese has strong belief in his ambitious targets

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is challenging his players to win the Premier League title in his first season in charge.

The Red Devils, on one of few occasions in recent seasons, are not the immediate favourites to take the league title to Old Trafford, however, that hasn’t stopped their new boss aiming high.

United are set to announce the world-record signing of Juventus’ Paul Pogba in the coming days, and on top of the shrewd transfer business already done this summer, Mourinho has already seemingly started to get the club back on track.

Despite having finished fifth, fourth and seventh in the past three seasons, Mourinho is confident his squad can go all the way this season, and defy all expectations, like he previously did by winning the Champions League with both Porto and Inter Milan.

“I like to create that expectation and I like the players to feel it,” said Mourinho.

“Sometimes, during my career, I created some unrealistic targets. By doing that, you push the team to unexpected levels – to win the Champions League with Porto and Inter is unexpected.

“Those were very risky objectives and targets.

“To win championships in the first season is a bit of the same, but I like that. People analyse it as arrogance and so on but that’s not a problem for me.

“The reality is that I always feel that targets like this can only help players, managers, clubs and this kind of establishment.”

Perhaps the fact that United will compete in the Europa League, rather than the Champions League, will allow Mourinho to rest his star players in Europe – given the fact that they will not be playing Europe’s elite in the competition.

And for the Portuguese to rest his key players will allow them to be fresh for the league, in which they will hold an advantage over the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, who will all compete in the Champions League this campaign.
