The Portuguese offered his resignation two months ago

Sacked Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is understood to have offered his resignation after defeat to West Ham United in October.

It was announced on Thursday that the Portuguese had been relieved of his duties as Blues boss, after the west London club managed just 15 points in 16 games, leaving them just a point above the relegation zone.

However, despite the former Real Madrid being sacked by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, it is understood Mourinho was ready to call an end to his second spell in charge after losing 2-1 away to West Ham, which was the start of a three-game losing streak.

During his third season in his second reign as Chelsea boss, Mourinho managed just four wins, drawing three times and losing nine, left owner Roman Abramovich with little choice but to show him the exit.

Mourinho was ready to discuss a settlement package with Chelsea after that defeat back in October and surprisingly the quick-acting Russian, Abramovich, hadn’t already relieved the 52-year-old of his duties.

Hiddink favourite to take over

Former interim boss Guus Hiddink is favourite to, once again, take over Chelsea on an interim basis, as he did back in 2009. Abramovich is likely to be targeting former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who is expected to announce he will leave Bayern Munich when his contract ends next summer.

Mourinho lashed out at his players following Monday night’s 2-1 defeat away to league-leaders Leicester City and took training today before being relieved of his duties at around 2pm.

Chelsea’s form has shown no sign of changing, and the 52-year-old had already admitted he felt his side’s chances of finishing in the top four had already been written off.
