Mourinho to convince Raphael Varane to join Chelsea

Jose Mourinho believes he can convince Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to join him at Chelsea. This time last year the Frenchman had managed to replace Pepe in Madrid’s starting eleven and it appeared he had nabbed a first team place at the club.

But a year is a long time in football and after an injury last May that kept him out of action for a considerable amount of time, he has now lost his starting place to Pepe again. He managed to start a few games for the Galacticos at the beginning of this year but since then, chances have been scarce.

Now, stories are beginning to surface that Varane may want out of the Spanish club. Marca originally claimed that Mourinho was keeping a close eye on the situation and now El Confidencial is reporting that the Chelsea boss could be set to offer Varane an escape route to Stamford Bridge, where he is seen as John Terry’s successor.

At 21, the young defender still has a lot to prove, but the Chelsea manager believes the potential is there for Varane to become as good, if not better, than Terry. That belief was backed up by the defender’s performances in big games for Madrid last season.

However, Real will not be too keen to let the youngster go, but with Chelsea vying for his signature and the lack of game time at Madrid, Varane may have other ideas about his future.
