Left-back dismisses Athletic Bilbao links

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has reassured fans of the club that he doesn’t want a return to Spain and wants to sign a contract extension in North London instead.

The Spaniard has had a brilliant season for The Gunners during the 2014/2015 campaign, managing to keep Kieran Gibbs out of the starting XI for the majority of the season.

Stand-out Season for Nacho

Monreal started playing at centre-back for the early stages of the season due to Laurent Koscielny‘s Achilles problem, and despite putting in some fine displays at centre-half, he was then moved back to his natural position of left-back, where he flourished yet again.

The 29-year-old seems a lot more confident in his own ability these days and has finally settled into the Arsenal team, after a tricky debut season, and he’s revealed how happy he is to be playing for the club.

The full-back had been linked with a Summer move back to Spain, with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao both keen on signing him, but he has dismissed those reports and has insisted that he’s happy in England with Arsenal.

Monreal Reveals Plans

‘I have one more year on my contract – but I want to stay,’ he said.

‘I am very lucky to play for Arsenal, and am very happy to play for Arsenal. If the boss wants me to stay, I will – and I’d like to extend my contract.’
