Belgium international hopes to one day play in England
Belgium winger Dries Mertens has put Liverpool on alert, after admitting he would like the ‘challenge’ of the Premier League.
The Reds have, in the past, been linked with the 28-year-old, who is currently contracted with Serie A side Napoli until 2018.
However, the Italian outfit hope to tie the winger down to a new deal, despite having three years to run on his current contract.
“The Premier League would be a good challenge.” said Mertens.
“Last week we talked about the renewal, it’s nice to know that the club is counting on you.”
Reds on alert
Liverpool could see the Belgium international as a replacement for Raheem Sterling, who left for Manchester City this summer.
However, Mertens has no desperation to head for England, which makes Napoli’s job easier to tempt him to sign a new deal.
Mertens made 38 appearances for FC Utrecht at the beginning of his career, before moving onto PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 37 league goals over two seasons.
