Clyne jokes about Milner’s fantastic work at full back

Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne has revealed that Jurgen Klopp calls him a ‘machine’, and that playing alongside James Milner at the back frustrates him slightly.

Clyne has been one of the nailed on starters at Anfield since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp a year ago, and his durability was underlined by the surprise at his withdrawal from the latest England squad with a knee problem.

Liverpool are hopeful that he will be fit to return for the game against Manchester United on October 17th.

“The manager has called me a machine in the past,” he said. “I’m not entirely sure why, it’s probably because I play in loads of games and rarely get injured or come off with knocks.

“All I try and do is my best for the team and try not to complain about anything.”

While Clyne has proven reliable at right-back, Liverpool have had continued issues in the opposite full-back berth.

However, the success this season of converted midfielder Milner in the position has left Clyne scratching his head.

Clyne joked: “He seems to make it look easy! I’ve trained my whole career to be a full-back and he comes in and makes it look easy! He’s enjoying it and also getting on the scoresheet.

“He’s a very experienced professional – every team needs a James Milner in their side. He can play in any position.”

Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive start to the season and stand just two points adrift of leaders Manchester City going into the international break.
