Magpies meet £12million asking price

Newcastle United have agreed to pay Tottenham Hotspur £12million for Andros Townsend.

The 24-year-old has fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane since Mauricio Pochettino‘s arrival at the club a few years ago, making just three substitute appearances so far this season.

Townsend fell out of favour after having a row with the club’s fitness coach, which Pochettino punished him for by dropping him to the reserves and banning him from the match-day squad.

The England international will be Steve McClaren‘s third signing of the window, following Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet, arrived from Swansea City and Bordeaux respectively.

Townsend is now expected to undergo a medical in Newcastle before finalising his move to St James’ Park.
