Newcastle United are reportedly close to securing the services of Atlanta United midfielder, Miguel Almiron.
The 24-year-old has been spotted at Tyneside and is rumoured to be going through a medical right now.
The report also claims that the Magpies have sent their head of recruitment, Steve Nickson to the United States of America to negotiate a deal for the attacking midfielder. Newcastle United are ready to make Almiron their most expensive signing of the club’s entire history.
Rafael Benitez did face competition from his former club Serie A clubs, Napoli and Inter Milan but managed to sway the minds of the Major League Soccer outfit.
Almiron has certainly made a name for himself in one of North America’s elite leagues, being hailed as one of the best players in the top division across the past two seasons.
The 12-time Paraguayan international stands at 5 feet 9 inches and likes to operate from the number ten spot. His contract with Atlanta runs till the summer of 2020. He managed 13 goals and 13 assists in 38 appearances last season.
Signing Almiron is certainly a risk mostly due to his lack of experience in the European top-flight but Newcastle need to take a chance on players like him. They are up against yet another relegation battle this season and their front line is struggling to create enough chances.
