Newcastle United have signed AS Monaco, Antonio Barreca on a loan for the rest of the 2018/19 campaign.
After drawing constant links with Lazio fullback, Jordan Lukaku, the Magpies have finalised a deal another one of their defensive targets this January.
Rafael Benitez had earmarked a left-back signing as his highest priority in the winter transfer window. Paul Dummett has been single-handedly carrying out all of the responsibilities in the position with no real backup behind him.
Achraf Lazaar has returned from his loan spell with Benevento but he is understandably not in Benitez’s plans at the St James’ Park.
Barreca has made 9 appearances this season, after switching from Torino last summer. He is itching for more playing and could expect to receive just that in Newcastle’s journey to avoid relegation.
The 23-year-old has fallen out of Leonardo Jardim’s favour at the Stade Louis, last making an appearance for the side in November 2018. His contract with the Ligue 1 outfit is set to last till the summer of 2023.
Baracca can certainly offer more going forward. He has the technical abilities of a modern-day full-back and could help out the Magpies as Kenedy struggles to hit his form this season on the left flank.
