Arsene Wenger rejects Sanchez claims

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rejected claims by Alexis Sanchez that the North London side lack the hunger to challenge for the Premier League title.

Chile international Sanchez hit out at his team-mates on Wednesday night to an American broadcaster, the Gunners slipped to a 2-1 defeat on home soil against Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium, by claiming that Arsenal lacked “hunger” to beat the South Wales outfit, as well as a potential title challenge.

Sanchez said: “There are great players here, I train with them daily and they have got the mentality and the desire to win, but sometimes we lack the hunger.

“Sometimes we lack this hunger to believe that we can be champions… [We need] to go out on to the pitch feeling that we are already winning 1-0.”

However, his manager Arsene Wenger refuted the outburst of Sanchez – saying that Arsenal were plainly unlucky to go down to a home reverse against the Swans.

Wenger Responds

Wenger stated: “No, I don’t see that.”

“I felt a lot of disappointment [in the dressing room] after Wednesday I must say, but to come back on that we watched the game again.

“We were a bit unlucky as the second goal was offside and the first was a blatant foul on Mesut Ozil.

“Even if we look at ourselves to correct results, everything went against us.”

Saturday lunchtime brings the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Should Arsenal lose at White Hart Lane, then their hopes for a first league championship since May 2004 will be all but over – whilst a win for the Lilywhites will take them to the top of the standings.

And Wenger has branded the game against their bitter-rivals as must win: “We want to win [against Spurs] but mathematically, you can call it as you want, the Frenchman said.

“It’s a need, yes, but results are so unpredictable that even the most gifted mathematician will have trouble to find the model for how this league works.”
