Official: Barcelona and Ajax agree on deal for Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of the club’s midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Barcelona will have to pay Ajax €75 million plus a further €11 million in variables. De Jong will join Barcelona in the summer on 1st July, 2019. He will be Ajax’s most expensive departure, surpassing Davinson Sanchez by a mile. Sanchez’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in 2017 landed Ajax €40 million.

De Jong is the most expensive Dutch footballer of all-time, surpassing Memphis Depay’s €34  million move to Manchester United in 2015. De Jong joined Ajax in 2016 and has made 65 appearances for the club so far, scoring 6 goals and providing 10 assists. This year, de Jong has made 28 appearances for Ajax, scoring four goals and providing an assist.

De Jong is Barcelona’s third winter signing after Jeison Murillo and Kevin Prince-Boateng. His addition to Barcelona’s squad is a big bonus for the Blaugrana. De Jong will join his Netherlands national teammate Jasper Cillessen at the club.
