The Russia International is expected to sign a 5 year contract
CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin has joined Monaco for an undisclosed fee. He is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 club and the move could be completed in the next few days.
“I am very happy to sign for Monaco,” Golovin told his new team’s website as quoted by Goal. “This is a new adventure for me that I approach with a lot of ambitions. I am now very much looking forward to meeting the staff and my new teammates and to get going.”
The Russia International made his debut for for the Russian Premier League giants and has been a mainstay in the midfield since then. He was a regular for the club last season, scored 7 goals and assisted 4 in 38 appearances in all competitions.
The 22 year was one of the revelations of the 2018 World Cup, picking up a goal and two assists in the tournament. He helped Russia to reach the quarter-finals as they defeated Spain but were defeated by Croatia in penalty shootouts.
He attracted lot of attention after his performance in Russia and was heavily courted by Chelsea. Their new manager Maurizio Sarri prioritized signing a quality central midfielder and his teammate Sergey Chepchugov even hinted that he could join the Blues.
But Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev told Russia publication Sport Express that he felt the French club offered a better opportunity for Golovin.
“Monaco and CSKA this afternoon finally agreed on the transfer of Golovin.
“They really were complicated. Honestly, until the last moment I was not sure that I would be able to coordinate this transfer.
“Our main competitor was Chelsea. I believe Monaco offered more favourable conditions for the club and a more understandable project for Golovin.”
