Owen: I begged for Liverpool return

Michael Owen has spoken out about how he desperately tried to re-sign for Liverpool in 2009 after having several talks with ex Liverpool Defender Jamie Carragher.

The striker scored over 100 goals for the reds before making the trip to Spain and Real Madrid’s galacticos in 2004, a move which didn’t work out very well for Owen.

After his spell with Newcastle United, Owen was on the prowl for another big club but his heart was set on a move back to Anfield where he’d enjoyed his best football.

The then boss Rafa Benitez turned down the chance and wasn’t interested so Owen took up the offer to join Manchester United and play for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The move did not go down well with Loverpool fans who saw Michael Owen as one of their greats and to sign for United was to sign for the enemy, but Owen insists he moved to Old Trafford as they were the best team in for him and he felt he was capable of still playing at the top level.

Injury saw Owen make only a handful appearances for the Red Devils before taking the decision to retire and take up a broadcasting spot with BT Sport, also a controversial move.
