The free agent was released by Spurs back in September

Emmanuel Adebayor has signed a deal with Crystal Palace until the end of the season, having been released by Tottenham Hotspur in September.

The Eagles have agreed to sign the Togo international, despite the striker having not featured for his previous club, Spurs, since May last year, in a home defeat to Manchester City, featuring for six minutes.

Talks between Palace and Adebayor have been ongoing for two weeks, and now the 31-year-old will be expected to boost the number of goals at Selhurst Park, with Alan Pardew’s men one of the lowest scorers in the league.

Tottenham agreed to terminate his contract back in September, after the African had failed to find himself a new club, having been left out of Spurs’ Europa League and Premier League squads.

A move to Aston Villa broke down after Adebayor insisted he wanted to stay in London and would only move to Villa Park if he could travel from London.

And a subsequent move deadline-day move to West Ham also broke down.

Adebayor excited by Prem return

The former Arsenal man tweeted his delight at returning to the Premier League, writing on his Twitter account: “SEA, I am pleased to announce that I have joined @cpfc on this day. Can’t wait to join the squad and start playing again in the EPL! #CPFC”

Strikers Fraizer Campbell, Dwight Gayle, Connor Wickham and Marouane Chamakh have managed a single league goal between them so far this campaign and Pardew sees Adebayor as a cost-effective way to ensure Palace hit the back of the net more often.

Pardew’s side have lost their last four league games and are without a win in six. Their last league victory came away to Stoke City in the middle of December, who they face at home in the FA Cup this weekend.

Adebayor, who will wear the number 25 shirt for Palace, is to be assessed by medical staff at Selhurst Park prior to the cup tie to decide whether he will be fit to feature, having not played a competitive fixture for eight months.

“I will have a good chat with the manager to see where my fitness level is at,” Adebayor said prior to his arrival.

“I have been working out every day and played a lot of games in Africa. It is not the same level, but the way I played it I played as if I was playing in the Premier League.”
