Jose Mourinho would most likely promote Zlatan Ibrahimovic to captain if Wayne Rooney left the club, according to ex-Red Devil Paul Parker.

The former defender spend five years at Old Trafford between 1991 and 1996, and is known for saying exactly how he feels about anything related to the Red Devils in recent years.

Parker believes Sweden skipper Ibrahimovic will be the next United captain under Mourinho, though he is not a fan of the idea.

The pundit claims he would rather see the armband go to someone who has more of a long-term plan rather than the 35-year-old, and says he is concerned about his relationship with boss Mourinho.

“It does need someone to step up and take it on, someone the others will look to and believe in their captain,” Parker told 888sport.

“I’m sure Mourinho would give it to Ibrahimovic because those two are joined at the hip but it needs someone more long-term who the fans and players respect as a leader.

“It has to be a player who name is written in stone on the team-sheet.”
