Manchester United legend urges club to sign ‘keeper

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has urged the club to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in order to replace Real Madrid bound David De Gea.

The Red Devils face losing their number-one this Summer as De Gea eyes a return to Spain with Real Madrid keen on making him Iker Casillas‘ long-term replacement.

United are desperate to keep hold of their Player of the Season, but according to manager Louis Van Gaal, the club face an uphill battle in keeping the Spaniard from returning home.

If De Gea does leave, and it’s looking more and more likely, United will have to find a suitable replacement and their former midfielder has urged them to sign Cech from Chelsea.

Scholes has said that if they do lose their current number-one, Cech should be the first player on their wishlist as he is ready to quit Stamford Bridge after falling down the pecking order.

The club legend has likened the possibility of signing Cech to when the club signed Edwin Van Der Sar from Fulham, and states that despite the goalkeeper’s age, he could still be a real star for United.

Scholes Speaks Out

“I remember the effect Edwin van der Sar had on the club when he arrived in 2005,” said Scholes.

“United had struggled since Peter Schmeichel to find a really commanding goalkeeper. Fabien Barthez was the closest we got.

“Edwin came ready-made. He was a Champions League winner, he had four years Premier League experience with Fulham and in the end our manager got six extremely successful years out of him.

“Edwin was almost 35 when he joined United. Cech has only just turned 33. He could potentially play another six years for United.

“There would be no concern about having to give him time to play his way into the position or the demands that the Premier League makes of a goalkeeper new to the country.

“United won’t want to lose De Gea but there is a solution in the offing.”
