Midfielder is a free agent in the Summer

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has urged James Milner to stay at the club and sign a contract extension rather than leave on a free this Summer.

The England international is set to leave the Etihad Stadium on a free with his contract expiring in a month’s time, but Pellegrini has made a last-gasp effort to keep him at the club.

Talks Ongoing

Milner has been in talks with the City board throughout the season about a new deal, and despite being happy with the offer, he is still concerned about his game-time and his role at the club.

Despite being a main figure this season, the former-Aston Villa midfielder has been in-and-out of the City team during his time at the club, and with his contract expiring, this was seen as the perfect time for him to leave and resurrect his career.

Reported Interest

According to reports, both Arsenal and Liverpool have shown interest in the 29-year-old, but it is the latter who are favourites to sign him.

Brendan Rodgers sees Milner as an ideal replacement for Steven Gerrard, who is joining LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

Milner is known for his versatility and his work-rate for the team, and Pellegrini admitted that he desperately wants him to stay at the club past this season.

Pellegrini Plea

He said: “James can play 10 positions and always do well. It is a decision James must take at the end of the season as to what is best for his future.

“He is an important player for our team because he is an intelligent player, who can play in several positions and always gives 100 per cent.

“I can think that being at Manchester City is best for him, but it is important what he thinks. I want to keep him.”

Milner scored at the weekend during City’s 4-2 win over Swansea City which all-but ensures them of a second-placed finish.
