Pepe Reina wishes Higuain goodbye ahead of Chelsea medical

AC Milan goalkeeper Pepe Reina has confirmed that Gonzalo Higuain is set to leave for Chelsea to undergo a medical and possibly complete a loan move to Stamford Bridge, saying that the 31-year-old has already waved his teammates a final goodbye.

Higuain has long been linked with a reunion with former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea, with the Italian in the lookout for a new striker to replace the likes of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud, both of whom have struggled to make an impact.

Chelsea went down 2-0 to Arsenal in the London derby on Saturday and Sarri came down hard on his players in the post-match conference, criticising their lack of mental aggressiveness and claiming that they are very difficult to motivate.

The Blues will be hoping to register Higuain before 12 p.m on Wednesday to have him available for use in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Spurs.

“I said goodbye to Higuaín with an embrace, it’s always a bitter moment,” said Reina at a charity event in Milan, as quoted by the Daily Star. “I wished him all the best and gave him a hug. Unfortunately, this too is football. I am losing a team-mate, but retain a great friend.”

Higuain’s AC Milan and Argentina teammate Lucas Biglia has confirmed that the Rossoneri are close to signing Krzysztof Piatek.

Lucas Biglia also confirmed Higuain’s exit: “There is a bitter feeling when saying goodbye, as Pipita is a friend,” said Biglia. “Another player will arrive, one who can hopefully become a great centre-forward. We want to continue doing well.” With that final quote, Biglia confirmed that Milan is close to signing Krzysztof Piatek.
