Arsenal captains, Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker, were the reason behind Danny Welbeck’s shock move from Manchester United, after it has been revealed that the duo held conversations with Welbeck whilst he was at London Colney with the England squad.
The national team were using Arsenal’s facilities ahead of their friendly with Norway, and whilst working out in the gym, Welbeck bumped into Arteta and Mertesacker, who both spoke to him about joining the club and snubbing a move to rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were desperately trying to sign Welbeck on transfer deadline day, but after Welbeck spoke with players from Arsenal, he was only interested in a move to the Emirates Stadium.
As well as the two captains having their say, the English core at Arsenal also pleaded with the club to sign the forward, as they were confident he’d make an impact on the pitch as well as off it.
Eventually, Welbeck signed a long-term deal with The Gunners in a deal worth £16million.
