Mikel Arteta could be replaced ahead of next season

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to name a new captain ahead of next season, and it could be newcomer Petr Cech, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta is the current captain at the Emirates Stadium, whilst Per Mertesacker is the vice. However, with the Spaniard rarely playing first-team football this season, Mertesacker has been the main captain and his centre-back partner Laurent Koscielny has become vice.

With Arteta expected to leave Arsenal over the summer once his contract expires, the club will need a new skipper, and despite Mertesacker being the vice, it’s being reported that he won’t be given the armband.

Cech To Captain Arsenal

According to reports, Cech is set to become the club’s new captain, with Wenger keen on giving the experienced veteran the role.

It’s believed Mertesacker won’t be a guaranteed starter next season, and Wenger is keen on making sure his captain this season is a mainstay in the starting XI.

It’s not yet officially confirmed as the decision will be made in the summer, but it’s reported that Cech is the strong favourite.
