Everton captain adds further year to deal

Everton Football Club have announced that club-captain Phil Jagielka has signed a one-year extension and will now remain at Goodison Park until 2018.

The centre-back still had two years left on his current deal, but officials in Merseyside wanted to reward his with a further 12-months after yet another solid campaign for The Toffees.

The 32-year-old has been at Everton since 2007 after completing a move from Sheffield United, and he has spoken to the club’s official website revealing his delight at penning a one-year extension.

Skipper Statement

“It’s always nice to feel wanted,” Jagielka told evertontv. “Being rewarded with the extra year gives me that motivation to keep striving to get better and to keep going for as long as possible.

“It wasn’t the longest negotiations ever – it only took a couple of minutes rather than hours. I love it here, I want to stay here and thankfully enough the Club felt the same.

“The contract was drawn up and I popped back after a little holiday to sign it. Now I look forward to getting back for pre-season.”

The England international won Everton’s Player of the Year for the 2014/2015 campaign and has made nearly 300 appearances for the club during his eight year spell.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez revealed his delight at his captain signing an extension.

Manager’s Delight

“It’s great news that Phil is extending his relationship with the Club,” added Martinez. “He has excelled as a leader and as a captain of our football club for the last two seasons.

“I am sure everyone connected with the Club will join me in being absolutely delighted that he has signed this extension to his deal.”
