Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka has told his team-mate Leighton Baines that he is still second-best to Chelsea’s Ashley Cole and will have to fight hard to take his place in the England first-team.

Fortunately for Baines, he is expected to start in England’s next two World Cup Qualifiers because of a rib-injury picked up by Cole.

Despite being crucial for The Toffees for the last two seasons, Baines is yet to break into the England first-team on a permanent basis, but it looks like he will have his chance to impress come Friday, when they host Montenegro at Wembley.

However, his Everton team-mate, Phil Jagielka, has told him that he is still second-fiddle, behind Cole.

Jagielka said: “It is a difficult one. Do you get a place in the team and keep it until you deserve to lose it?

“Or do you get a place in the team and lose it because you have done nothing wrong but someone else is potentially liked more by the press or coaching staff?

“I think Ashley has performed to levels that he does not deserve to lose his place and Bainsey is one of my closest friends.

“He has been fantastic for us at Everton but unfortunately for him, the person he has tried to nudge out of the way has performed very well, particularly in an England shirt.”
