Phil Neville has taken an astonishing dig at Manchester United, claiming they are still over £100million away from challenging for the title.
Neville has stated that he wasn’t surprised with United’s 5-3 loss to Leicester because of their poor defence. The former defender believes that they still have problems at centre-back and in midfield, and despite them spending £150million on new players, Neville thinks they are still a whole season away from competing with Chelsea and Man City,
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I know United have spent £150m.
“I think there’s another two transfer windows of similar amounts of money needed – maybe £100m – before they can even think about winning the title.
“I think the centre-back position is obviously the key area [where they need to strengthen].”
“Holding midfield or centre midfield needs addressing [too].”
But Neville defended United’s summer transfer business by suggesting there is no point buying players if they are not of the required standard.
He added: “That squad needed quality, not just run-of-the-mill players, they needed world-class players.
“And there were no world-class centre-backs out there. I think that’s why in the next two transfer windows, United might still be looking for that world-class defender.
“I am certain Chris Smalling will come good and I have full faith in Phil Jones as well. They’ve bought of a lot of foreign players, you don’t get rid of your English spine.”
