Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has demanded a clear out of the Reds’ current strike force, to make way for Gonzalo Higuain and Edinson Cavani.

Thompson, who won three European cups with Liverpool believes Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert should all leave in the summer, after enduring dismal seasons.

The now Sky Sports pundit thinks the club should be looking to bring in quality like Higuain, and the PSG duo of Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

He has also warned Brendan Rodgers against signing Burnley striker Danny Ings, advising him to set his sights on signing a proven forward.

Thompson said: “There will be quite a few offloaded and Rodgers might have a bit of a clear out.

“I think it will be very difficult for Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini to remain and, whether the club want to move them on or not, I think they’re going to want to seek pastures new.

“Burnley’s Danny Ings doesn’t have the experience to carry that weight and I think Brendan Rodgers needs to bring in a more established striker.

“Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani or somebody of that ilk is required, which means Liverpool are going to have to spend big to be considered title contenders next season.”
