Barcelona have been handed a massive boost by the news that their Spanish centre-back, Pique, has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2019.

The news comes just days after his team-mate Lionel Messi also signed a new contract at the Nou Camp, as the club, who hired former midfielder Luis Enrique as their new manager on Monday, announced that the contract will be officially signed over the coming days.

The 27 year old has spent the majority of his career at Barcelona, having spent time as a youngster in the team’s youth setup. He was signed by Manchester United as a teenager but failed to establish himself at Old Trafford, spending a year old loan at Real Zaragoza.

He returned to Barcelona in 2008 and has now played 266 games for the club, winning 4 La Liga titles, the Copa del Ray twice, and claiming two Champions League winners medals too. The news will give the club the boost they wanted after being denied back-to-back La Liga titles by Atletico Madrid on Saturday after the teams drew 1-1 in a title decider at the Nou Camp.
