Pique says Messi injury won’t have an adverse affect on Barcelona

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has said that Lionel Messi’s injury will not have a negative effect on the team. Messi injured his arm a few minutes after scoring Barcelona’s second goal against Sevilla. Tests showed that the Barcelona captain fractured the radial bone in his right arm and will be out of action for three weeks. This means that Messi will miss Sunday’s El Clasico among other matches.

Like every other season, Messi has been terrific for Barcelona so far, scoring 12 goals and registering 6 assists in 12 matches across all competitions. Hence, his absence is a  big blow for Barcelona. However, Pique is of the opinion that Barcelona have enough firepower in their belly to cope without Messi.

Pique said, “Psychologically we know that when he is there we are stronger but we cannot allow his absence to affect us. It makes a big difference to have or not to have him but we have enough cover so as not to worry about whether he is there or not.”

Barcelona’s next match is a Champions League fixture against Inter Milan on Wednesday.  The Blaugrana have won their past two fixtures against Ajax and Tottenham and will hope to maintain their winning run.
