One of Chelsea’s defenders is expected to be sold this summer due to concerns about his height. Enzo Maresca currently has a wide range of alternatives for his defence. Maresca has Marc Cucurella, Ben Chilwell, Malo Gusto, and captain Reece James at full-back.

If Ian Maatsen stays at Chelsea, which seems doubtful, he will also be a left-back option. Maatsen spent the second part of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Tosin Adarabioyo ought to be at Stamford Bridge shortly, but Maatsen appears to be leaving. Maybe they will improve in that area if they have a taller defender like Adarabioyo on their team.

£35m Ian Maatsen opens up on Chelsea frustrations as likely to exit this summer

During the first half of the season, the 22-year-old made just one Premier League start. In January, he was forced to move on in quest of greater playing time.

The full-back, whose loan agreement expires at the end of the current campaign, stated, “It was a surprise.”

“I always thought I could play for Chelsea, but sadly, things didn’t work out.”

“Now that I’m here, I want to express my gratitude for this chance and this instant. I came here to play my game at the highest level, and I can say that I’m really proud of myself and that I never gave up on myself.”

Last summer, Maatsen declined a £31.5 million transfer to Burnley after Chelsea accepted the offer. Before going on loan to Dortmund, the defender extended his contract, but the £35 million release clause means the left-back is still probably going to be sold.
