Pochettino Urges Fans To Act Against Racism

Raheem Sterling highlighted the issues of racism in world football after falling victim to abuse in Manchester City’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was subjected to a banana peel thrown at him when Arsenal faced Tottenham Hotspur for the North London derby a couple of weeks back.

The two sides are due to face each other again this Wednesday for the Carabo Cup fixture and Mauricio Pochettino has called upon his own fans to act against racism.

“I don’t care if it is Arsenal fans, Argentina fans, Tottenham fans, Espanyol or Barcelona fans – I am against this type of situation. For me, it [racism] is the worst thing in the world and that is why I am completely against this behaviour. I don’t want to be populist – I don’t care whether it is our fans or other fans, I want to kill [the bad behaviour and racism]. For me it is like this. Our responsibility is to behave like this.”

The fan who threw the banana peel at the Gabon international was later arrested by the Metropolitan Police and has also been banned by Tottenham. Chelsea have taken a strict stance against it as well. They too took immediate action and banned four of their own supporters who were directly responsible for hurling abuse on Sterling.
