Premier League club interested in Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen
Arsenal are set to step up interest in Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to replace Petr Cech at the end of the season, according to reports in the Daily Express this week.
Spanish source Don Balon also reports that the Gunners are keen on Ter Stegen, who has established himself as the number one choice at the Camp Nou after Claudio Bravo left for Manchester City in 2016.
It would take quite an offer for Barca to be persuaded to let the German international leave, and you would think Arsenal would also need to be back in the Champions League to have any chance of signing him.
However, if they want to keep the likes of Mesut Ozil around then signings such as this is what they need. Fans have been crying out for some ambition for the club for years now, but a signing such as this would be a step in the right direction.
Petr Cech has done well since moving from Chelsea in 2015, but still divides opinion at times. Now 36 years of age, it’s time the Gunners start thinking about finding a long term replacement.
Ter Stegen is already one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and at 25 has at least a decade left at the top level. Back in April, he admitted that his long-term future at Barca was not certain.
“I live in the moment, that is what is most important,” he said. “I try to do the best for me and for the team. Give my best and improve. You never know what comes after.”
