The 56th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster was remembered by a whole host of clubs and players on Thursday who paid their respects to those involved.

Football marked the annual remembrance of the tragedy through the use of social media, with several former Manchester United players giving their tributes to the victims of the plane crash.

Fierce local rivals Manchester City also offered their support by tweeting: “Today Manchester City remembers all those who so tragically lost their lives in the Munich Air Disaster.”

United’s official website said: “On 6 February 1958, a charter plane carrying 44 people crashed after refuelling at Munich Airport.

“The accident claimed 23 lives, among them eight Manchester United players and three club officials.

“We will never forget.”
