PSG star reveals that Chelsea tried to sign him on deadline day
Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier has revealed that Chelsea tried to sign him on transfer deadline day back in the summer, but PSG would not let him go due to their lack of options at full-back.
The 26 year-old currently plays second fiddle to Dani Alves at the Parc des Princes, but would have left Unai Emery with just one right-back for the season had he been allowed to go.
In the end, Chelsea signed Davide Zappacosta from Torino instead and Meunier stayed at PSG. However, the Belgian international also stated that he didn’t want to move to Stamford Bridge.
“I could have left for Chelsea on the final day of the transfer window. But I didn’t want to join them. I am happy at PSG and I don’t want to leave.” he told a local TV station.
Although primarily a defender, Meunier has made his name as something of a goalscoring full-back and has scored 3 times in 7 Ligue 1 matches so far this season.
He also found the net 5 times in 8 games for Belgium in their successful World Cup qualifying campaign, with his form also attracting interest from Manchester United.
Chelsea will go back into the market for defenders in January. Read our list of their Top 5 Transfer Targets here.
