Manchester United and Liverpool wanted star-midfielder

Radja Nainggolan has reportedly signed a five year contract extension with Roma, snubbing interest primarily from Liverpool.

The midfielder was co-owned by Roma and Cagliari, but this new deal sees Rudi Garcia‘s side take 100% ownership of the player, after negotiations were carried out between the two Serie A clubs.

Premier League Interest

The Belgium international had been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool and Manchester United reportedly the interested clubs.

But after completing the signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin on Monday, United won’t be in the market for another central midfielder.

Liverpool are however still after another midfielder to partner captain Jordan Henderson, with Steven Gerrard’s departure to LA Galaxy.

Although new signing James Milner can play in that position.

Nainggolan made 33 league appearances for Roma last season, as they finished 2nd behind champions Juventus, and in turn qualifying for the coming season’s Champions League.

Midfielder Statement

After signing the new deal, the midfielder said: “It was something we both wanted,” Nainggolan said on his new deal.

“I am happy and so is the club. We both took a step forward and found the best solution for everyone.

“Now we must start from scratch and do better than last season. We are preparing physically to win something important this year.”
