Rafael Benitez reflects on ‘successful’ Chelsea stint

Napoli manager Rafael Benitez believes his brief stint at Chelsea in the 2012/2013 season was a success.

The former-Liverpool boss took over at Stamford Bridge in November 2012 after the club decided to sack Roberto Di Matteo after a poor start to their Champions League defence, and it was a decision that didn’t go down well with the Chelsea fans.

After several run-ins with the club during his time at Anfield, Benitez wasn’t welcomed nicely from the Stamford Bridge faithful, and nearly all of them refused to support him during his stay, despite him guiding them to Europa League success at the end of the campaign.

However, despite not being accepted by the fans, Benitez has reflected on his time there and believes it was a complete success.

“It was not just the fans,” Benitez told talkSPORT.

“My main concern were the players and the staff, the people around and I was really pleased [when I left].

“I still have a lot of contacts and everyone could see it was a difficult time from the beginning, we did well.

“Even the staff and the board and the people around are happy with what we did. We did what we had to do and that is it.”
