Winger insists it’s about trophies and not money

Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has revealed what was the deciding factor in him leaving Liverpool this summer in a record-breaking deal worth £49million.

The 20-year-old became the most expensive British player after he swapped Anfield for the Etihad Stadium, and in his first interview at his new club, he revealed why he decided to complete the move.

Sterling signed a five-year deal at City, worth reportedly £200k-a-week, but according to the player, the move was about competing for trophies year-in, year-out, and not about the financial gain.

Sterling Speaks

He said: “The world class players that are here and a squad that are capable of winning things year in, year out.

“The more quality players that are around you, the more quality it brings out in you so I can’t wait to get started and play alongside them.

“The facilities are top class – there’s everything you need here and plenty more. There’s everything you need to take you to the next level so there’s no excuses!”

Sterling snubbed a contract extension at Liverpool worth around £100k-a-week, and despite leaving in uncomfortable fashion, he has thanked everyone associated with the club for helping his career progress.

Thank You Statement

“I’d like to thank Rafa Benitez for taking me to Liverpool as a 15 year old – that was a massive step for me and a new challenge.

“Also, to Kenny Dalglish for showing such faith in me and putting me in at such a young age. finally I’d like to thank Brendan Rodgers for giving me a chance and an opportunity in the first team, giving me my full debut – against City, funnily enough – and giving me a real chance to cement a place in the first team and show the world my talents.

“I’d also like to thank all the people around me – my mum and sisters, my management team, and Aidy Ward for helping me focus and get where I am today.

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone.”
