Sterling and his contracts talks seem no nearer a conclusion, it is thought his representatives are trying to force through a £150,000 a week deal, a City are now keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Pellegirini has claimed that figures for England’s star are ‘bloated’ and that is the reason why City look abroad for players.

The Chilean said: “Can you get Sterling? Maybe if  you go to Liverpool with £100m you can. If I want an English player in the position of Silva who is ther? Maybe Rooney, but who else?”

“It is important to have English players but can you sign them? You are talking about trying to sign players from clubs that won’t sell them. Let’s say you want to buy Shaw, £35m for a left-back.”

“I’m not sure about spending that much money when we have Clichy and Kolarov.”
