Boss Zinedine Zidane has hinted De Gea will not join Real

Reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid are no longer interested in long-term target David De Gea, following last summer’s failed transfer.

Farcical circumstances meant that the Spanish giants missed out on the €40 million signing of De Gea, having submitted their paperwork for the transfer late, to La Liga.

And now Spanish newspaper Marca have reported that Real have ‘pulled the plug’ on a move for the Manchester United goalkeeper, instead, deciding to offer Keylor Navas at new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Costa Rica international has performed admirably in the Spanish capital this season, while Zidane is also happy with the quality of back up he has in that position, with Kiko Casilla and Ruben Yanez.

“I can tell you I am very happy with the keepers I have, not just with Keylor [Navas] who is playing, but with Kiko Casilla and Ruben Yanez too. That is the most important for me,” Zidane said earlier this month.

Fans’ favourite Navas

Navas has become a favourite amongst Real fans, and the signing of De Gea is not one that interests them, who are keen for Navas to stay put – having been set to move to England, with United, last summer, as part of the deal that would have took De Gea back to Spain.

“Keylor Navas is a fans’ favourite and his performances have been top-drawer. There is no need to search for another goalkeeper, and that includes De Gea.” Sources from the Real Madrid board said.

Navas is to be given a ‘bumper’ deal to keep him at the Bernabeu, while it will be a relief to Red Devils’ fans, that their ‘keeper looks set to at least see out his current contract.

The 25-year-old signed a new four-year deal to keep him at the club until 2019 still, but, at the time of the new contract, there was still some doubt about whether De Gea would ‘genuinely’ be staying at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
